Equity Gallery is pleased to announce Between Here and Our Destination, a solo exhibition by Rhys Hecox, on view from June 23 to July 30, 2016, with a public opening reception on Thursday, June 23, 6-8pm. This is the artist’s New York gallery debut.

Hecox presents new film and video works that play with perception. The five works in the exhibition explore how the moving image challenges us to be more aware of subtle changes in our environments. With scenes of bucolic landscapes to industrial ships to a Brooklyn lamppost, the works consider seasonal change, journeying, nostalgia and personal narrative. Through an internal shift in perspective of the viewer, the beautiful becomes ominous, the observed becomes an unreliable memory, and the familiar becomes exotic.

Hecox’s art examines time, space, and memory. By concentrating on silent, non-narrative pieces and shooting mostly on 16mm film, he encourages the images and the imagination to work together. The simple beauty of the work and the mood created through the rich images invite introspection and quiet contemplation. The work provokes a shift in the viewer from passive observer to active participant and prompts us to reconsider the very act of looking.

Rhys Hecox (b. 1980, Michigan) is an experimental filmmaker and artist based in New York. He received his BA in Film Studies from the University of Michigan in 2008.
