Carol Diamond, Go Ahead, Make Me, presents small to mid-sized sculptures built from discarded urban materials—bent metal, broken glass, car parts, cables, fabric, and wire mesh—bound together with epoxy and concrete. Through an intuitive process, these cast-off fragments are transformed into abstract, organic forms that explore growth from destruction, beauty from imperfection, and resilience from fragility. The title evokes a dialogue between artist and material, as the city’s remnants seem to challenge their own transformation.
Drawn to materials shaped by industry and human labor, then damaged and discarded, Diamond rebuilds these fragments into sculptural forms that challenge habits of disposal and neglect, asserting care, repair, and persistence as meaningful creative acts. Influenced by ancient and medieval stone sculpture, sacred glass traditions, and her background in antiquities restoration, she attends closely to surface, structure, and the passage of time.
Working without a fixed plan, each piece evolves through direct engagement with its materials. The resulting sculptures—often rough, irregular, yet carefully balanced—reflect lived experience rather than idealized form. Rooted in decades of practice in New York City, the work draws from the material life of the urban environment, inviting reflection on reuse, transformation, and the expressive potential of everyday objects.
